Protecting youth: Trying to take predators offline

Virginia's sex offenders would be the first in the country to report their e-mail and Instant Messenger addresses to the state and would be blocked from the popular Web site MySpace as part of sweeping change sought by Attorney General Bob McDonnell.

The announcement Monday followed news last week that two U.S. senators will offer similar legislation for the federal sex offender registry.

McDonnell hopes to compile the information for a database that would prevent offenders from joining MySpace and other social networking Web sites that are popular among teenagers.

"We require all sex offenders to register their physical and mailing addresses in Virginia, but in the 21st century it is just as critical that they register any e-mail addresses or IM screen names," he said.

If approved, the legislation would make Virginia's registry among the most comprehensive in the country and as more companies follow suit, online restrictions for Virginia's offenders could intensify.

Why are they even allowed internet privileges after being convicted of a sexual crime?
No guns, no drugs, alcohol, and I think this list should include the internet.

Look at the number of arrests of these scumbags on the internet!

We need to stop pampering these predators and treat them like the human garbage that they are.

They cannot be rehabilitated.

Shocked

Mad You know how I feel about this ... it's an outrage! It really bothers me that my tax dollars go to support the self-indulgent lifestyles of convicted criminals, especially sexual predators. Their fingers should be so worn raw from picking berries or mending potholes that they aren't able to use a keyboard!

I wish they'd put these issues to a vote!
